Residents of the Orange County Coastal area who have an interest in maritime activities and history may wish to set aside the weekend of Sept 5 through Sept 7, 2014 so that they can participate in the 30th Annual Toshiba Tall Ships Festival being held at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point. There will be a tall ships parade, mock cannon battles, tours of the Ocean Institute Museum and training facilities. Visitors may book passage on participating ships to experience first hand the excitement of crew and deck activity during the mock cannon battles .
An excerpt from the TallShipsFestival.com web site reads as follows:
One of the best ways to experience the Toshiba Tall Ships Festival is by sailing onboard a tall ship during the popular mock cannon battles. Experience the sights, smells, and sounds of a real working tall ship! Enjoy blasting cannons, towering rigging, bustling decks and the magnificence of canvas full of wind. Work with the crew hauling up sail or simply sit back and enjoy the spectacular demonstration of skill, knowledge and survival!
In addition to the Ocean Institute’s permanently berthed two vessels , the “Pilgrim” and the “Spirit of Dana Point”, there will be seven visiting tall ships from other ports of call. The ship descriptions may be seen at the Participating Ships link:
Take the family and have a great time experiencing and learning some maritime history.
